Excessive heat warning in effect for the area

Weather officials have issued an excessive heat warning for numerous cities in South Central Kansas, including Winfield, Ark City and Wellington.

The warning is in effect through 8 p.m. Friday according to the National Weather Service. Heat indices of 105 to 110 degrees are expected during that time.

Such conditions can cause heat exhaustion and potentially heat stroke, if precautions are not taken.

Those working outside are urged to take frequent breaks in shaded or air conditioned areas. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location.

Heat stroke is an emergency and 911 should be called.

Temperatures inside vehicles can become lethal within just a few minutes. Children and pets should never be left in vehicles.
