3 flee an SUV with stolen tags by Cambridge

Authorities searched for about two hours Thursday evening for three people who fled after getting a Chevy Trailblazer, with stolen tags, high centered on railroad tracks east of Cambridge.

The 2006 Trailblazer was registered in Texas and has not been reported stolen. Tags on it, though, were reported stolen in Wichita, according to Steve Deill with the Cowley County Sheriff’s Dept.

Deill said the search was being called off due to darkness. By 9:30 p.m., officers had been search more than two hours.

“We’ll stay in the area,” Deill said. “But the terrain is just too bad to start searching on foot in the dark.”

The incident began on railroad tracks near the intersection of 291st Rd. and U.S. Highway 160 east of Cambridge. South Kansas and Oklahoma Railroad officials notified authorities to report a vehicle that was on the tracks and impeding the train’s progress.

Two white males and a white female who were in the vehicle spoke with crew members of the train. When law enforcement arrived near the scene, however, all three fled.

“They talked to the crew, and gave a bunch of reasons for why they were there,” Deill said.

Contact has been made with residents in the area to notify them of the situation, he said.

Deill provided NewsCow with a rough description of the potential suspects. Most notably, the female wore a white tank top and hair that was dyed blue.

The white males were described as having muscular builds. One had no shirt on, the other had no shirt on but had a black shirt tied around his neck and brown shorts.

One of the men had a noticeable gap between his two front teeth.

The Trailblazer was towed from the tracks so train traffic could continue onward.
