East Madison Bridge Closed Through Thursday for Tree Removal; Open at Night

The East Madison Avenue bridge across the Walnut River will be closed today through Thursday for tree removal between the bridge and Crestwood Drive.

The closure will occur from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. The road will be reopened each night, then closed again the following morning. Access for local residents on this stretch of road will be maintained.

The removal of trees along the north right-of-way of Madison is necessary so a new 12-inch water line can be installed in that area. It will serve as a future connection to a redundant line across the river.

This open-cut line water line replacement project by Goddard-based Nowak Construction was approved July 25 by the City Commission of Arkansas City, for an amount not to exceed $124,278.

East Madison will be closed completely on the west side at its intersection with the U.S. 77 bypass.

The east closure will be at Crestwood Drive, although local traffic will be allowed through to access the residences west of Crestwood Drive. Nonlocal traffic will be detoured at Country Club Road.

The Crestwood neighborhood will remain accessible from East Chestnut Avenue for the duration of the project. For questions, call the Public Works Department at (620) 441-4480 or (620) 441-4488.
