Permission Sought to Post No-Smoking Signs In Winfield Parks

No-smoking signs could be coming to a Winfield park near you.

City-Cowley County Health Department officials have asked city commissioners for permission to install signs in most of the parks in the city. Signs were received from the Kansas Dept. of Health Environment.

If city commissioners approve, city staff will install poles and the signs to
demonstrate a commitment to having tobacco free parks.

The commission will discuss the request at a work session at 4 p.m. today at city hall in Winfield.

GAS ODORANT STATION

City commissioners will also hear a report on the replacement of a broken-down gas odorant station. It is used to add odor to natural gas so that residents can detect leaks.

The equipment recently stopped working and several attempts to repair it have been unsuccessful. Gas utility workers have been adding the odorant manually, but that won’t be a feasible solution once the colder months arrive and gas usage increases, city officials have said.

The city is currently getting bids on a replacement and expect the cost to be less than $25,000.
