Sheriff: Inmate’s Death Thursday Has Been Ruled A Suicide

The death of an inmate Thursday afternoon at the Cowley County Jail in Winfield has been ruled a suicide, according to Sheriff Dave Falletti.

The inmate has been identified as 48-year-old Jason D. Porter of Ark City.

On Thursday at approximately 1:30 p.m., Porter crawled over a second story railing and fell to the floor. He was transported to William Newton Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

An investigation by the Kansas Bureau of Investigation and the Cowley County Sheriff’s Office has revealed that this was an intentional act by the inmate.

An autopsy was performed at the Sedgwick County Regional Forensic Science Center in Wichita and the death has been ruled as a suicide.

Several inmates in the pod with Mr. Porter as well as corrections staff on duty during this traumatic event were counseled by the Cowley County Sheriff’s Chaplain Corps.
