Crews Respond To Pair Of Recent Fires In Winfield

A cooking fire led to an evacuation Wednesday at a retirement community in north Winfield.

Around 8:20 p.m., fire crews responded to the 700 block of Tweed for a fire at Cumbernauld Village.

The fire started in an apartment unit where someone was cooking. The building was evacuated for a time, however, no injuries were reported.

The building did sustain minor smoke damage.

On Sunday night, a garage sustained minor damage as a result of a fire that spread from a nearby residence.

Embers from a backyard fire at 1304 E. Fourth in Winfield spread to a garage at a neighboring property at 302 Michigan.

Fire crews were called at approximately 9:10 p.m.

Damage to the garage was minimal.
