Winfield 24-Hour Laundry Will Require Electrical Work Before Reopening

It will take some work to reopen the Holiday Laundry on Main in Winfield. A fire Friday night caused smoke and water damage to most of the building at 1524 Main.

Just before midnight, Winfield fire crews were called to the 24-hour laundromat for the report of a structure fire. They arrived to find heavy smoke and some fire.

Two dryers and a portion of the building were damaged by the fire itself. Most of the building sustained significant smoke and water damage.

Fire marshal Chad Mayberry said a cause of the fire is undetermined and an investigation is continuing. The fire appeared to begin near a particular dryer that had been left running with clothes in it.

“There was equipment running at the time,” Mayberry said. “We’re not sure at this point if it’s malfunction of equipment, or not.”

Mayberry said a considerable amount of electrical work will need to be done before the business reopens. A city crew was making plans today to establish temporary electrical service for the building.

Vern Hull, the owner of the property, addressed patrons in a message entitled “we’re closed for a while” on the business’s web site.

“We’re temporarily closed due to a fire that caused damage throughout the building overnight on December 15, 2017,” he wrote. “Thanks for your understanding and support during this time.”

Mayberry did not give a cost estimate on the damage.
