Winfield Convenience Store Closes Briefly Monday When Clerk Walks Off The Job

Winfield’s Jumpstart Shamrock convenience store, on Main, was closed unexpectedly Monday after a disgruntled employee locked the door and walked off the job, police said.

Police received calls just after noon today when the store remained closed for an extended period of time. There was a sign on the door that indicated someone working there had needed a restroom break and would return.

But no one returned.

Customers outside began to worry someone inside the store had fallen ill or otherwise been harmed.

Duane Sherrard, of the Winfield Police Dept., was called to the store at 14th and Main, to investigate.

“It was a disgruntled employee,” he said. “Basically just locked the door and walked away.”

Eventually, managers of the store made contact with the employee, who said the incident was to serve as their resignation. The store was closed for about 35 to 45 minutes, Sherrard estimated.

Management gained entry to the building and police made sure everything inside was in order. No crime was committed and no case was opened with the police department.
