Ark City Voters Approve Long-Term Sales Tax For Financially-Ailing Hospital

Ark City voters have overwhelmingly approved a long-term, one-cent sales tax to fund debt payments for the South Central Kansas Medical Center building.

Unofficial results of the mail-ballot election show 1,321 people voted in favor of the tax, while 670 voted against it. There were 11 undervoted ballots, 32 provisionals and 330 that were returned undeliverable.

The results were compiled by the Cowley County Clerk’s office which is also this county’s election office.

Results are not official until vote canvassing can be completed at 9 a.m. Monday at the Cowley County Courthouse in Winfield.

The one-cent sales tax will replace two shorter-term sales taxes that totaled 1.5 cents on the dollar.
