Winfield Fire Dept.: Hay Fire In Viral Video Was Safely Put Out Friday

A flaming bale of hay – that was captured on video as it made its way down the highway near Winfield Friday – was safely extinguished, local fire officials say.

Around 8:50 a.m., Winfield police and fire units were called to the area of U.S. 77 Highway and Quail Ridge for the report of a possible vehicle fire. Emergency crews arrived at the location but found nothing there, according to Peter Rowley with Winfield Fire-EMS.

A trail of burning hay, however, led to a location at 33rd and Country Club Rd. where the driver of a vehicle had stopped. The driver had dumped a burning load of hay and was using a garden hose to put it out.

The fire dept. took over and extinguished the fire. The driver is said to have been well aware of the burning hay and was looking for a safe place to dump it. No citations were issued, Rowley said.

Video of the burning bale has gone viral and been viewed more than 100,000 times on Facebook.
