Heavy Rains Prompt Flooding Warnings For Arkansas, Walnut Rivers

Heavy rains have led to several flood warnings in the area.

According to Ark City Emergency Manager Bob Frazee via email Monday afternoon, River Flood Warnings have been issued for the Arkansas River at Ark City and Oxford, along with the Walnut River at Winfield and Ark City.

Citing reports from the National Weather Service, Frazee said river flooding will continue through the end of the week. Both rivers are expected to rise above flood stage by Tuesday.

Closings at some locations have also been issued. Walnut Park in Ark City is closed as well as West Chestnut Park west of the levee in Ark City. Frazee says storm water gates at the Arkansas River levee have been closed and that Walnut River storm gates will be closed over the next 24 hours.

Counties in the warnings include Cowley, Sumner and Sedgwick near Mulvane.

In Kay County in Oklahoma, the Ponca City News reports residents along the Chikaskia River have been warned to prepare for flood waters.
