West Madison Bridge Expected To Close Monday For Replacement Project

The West Madison Ave. Bridge – over the Arkansas River on U.S. 166 highway – is expected to close Monday for a months-long bridge replacement project.

A pre-construction meeting was held today and the contractor plans to start work Thursday. Kayakers, canoeists and boaters are asked to steer clear of that part of the river during the project, according to Kansas Dept. of Transportation spokesperson Deb Gruver.

Total cost for the Kansas Dept. of Transportation project is just under $6.4 million. Iowa-based A.M. Cohron & Son Inc., which lists a location in Emporia, submitted that bid and is general contractor for the project.

The company specializes in bridge construction. They will have 250 working days to complete the project and traffic could be affected for a year or more.

The bridge crosses the river west of Ark City and is about five miles east of the Cowley-Sumner County line.
