Police: Man Shot Multiple Times In Winfield Friday, One Suspect In Custody

Winfield police say one man is in custody and the search continues for the second suspect involved in a shooting in Winfield Friday afternoon.

According to a news release from the Winfield Police Department Monday morning, 20-year-old Deasian Fair of Wichita was taken into custody and booked into the Cowley County Jail on charges of attempted 2nd degree murder as well as aggravated robbery. His bond is set at $260,000.

Fair has a previous conviction in Sedgwick County for aggravated assault dated June 2017.

A victim, listed as a 26-year-old male, was shot multiple times and was transported by Winfield EMS to a Wichita area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

At approximately 2:06 p.m. on Friday, officers from the WPD and members of Winfield Fire/EMS were dispatched to the 500 building of St. James Court for the report of a victim of a gunshot wound. During the investigation, officers learned there were two suspects involved in this incident.

Witnesses reported seeing two African American males armed with at least one handgun run from the scene of the shooting.

Members from the Cowley County Sheriff’s Office, the Sumner County Sheriff’s Office, the Kansas Highway Patrol, and the Southern Kansas Special Weapons and Tactics Team responded to the area and assisted officers from the Winfield in search efforts to locate the two suspects.

As the investigation unfolded members from the Cowley County Tracking team also responded and assisted in the investigation.

During the course of the investigation, Fair was located and taken into custody in the 1900 building of St. James Court.

Investigators executed search warrants at the original location where the incident took place as well as a separate apartment in the complex. During the second search warrant execution two handguns were recovered.

Investigators are still actively investigating this incident and are following up on leads to identify the second suspect in this incident. As the investigation unfolds additional criminal charges are possible.

It is believed this was an isolated incident and there is no known threat to the public.
