UPDATE: McConnell AFB Explosive Disposal Unit Called To Burden Home

A news release from the Burden Police Department Monday morning says it was contacted by family members of a recently deceased man late Saturday night after they reported that they had found suspicious items in the residence.

Authorities evaluated the situation and determined they would begin the investigation during the daylight hours on Sunday morning.

Sunday morning bomb squad members, Cowley County Sheriff’s Office, Cowley County Fire District #3, Winfield Fire & EMS and Burden Police secured the area. Five houses in the vicinity of the home were evacuated before authorities began searching the home.

Authorities did locate some suspicious items and called McConnell Air Force Explosive Ordinance Disposal Unit to respond to the scene and take possession of the items. McConnell Explosive Ordinance Disposal Unit responded and took the items to a rural area outside of Burden and destroyed them.

Additional items were located, but after briefing McConnell personnel it was decided that the items would be safe and nearby residences could return to their homes late Sunday evening. Law Enforcement personnel remained on scene throughout Sunday night.

Monday morning McConnell Explosive Ordinance Disposal Unit returned and secured the remaining items.

No charges are expected to be filed at this time.

Family members contacted the Burden Police Department about suspicious objects found in a home inside the city limits of Burden, according to a news release from Burden Chief of Police Roger Wilt Sunday afternoon.

McConnell Air Force Base Explosive Ordinance Disposal Unit responded and rendered the scene safe.

Main Street has been closed from 1st Street to 3rd Street in Burden as a precaution.

Cowley County Sheriff’s Office, Cowley County Fire District #3 and Winfield Fire & EMS are assisting the Burden Police Department.
