Legacy Regional Community Foundation Grants Committee presented $2,000 to Dexter Elementary School as a part of the Active Play Matching Grant program, according to a news release from the Winfield-based foundation Wednesday afternoon.

Whitney Killman submitted the grant on behalf of USD 471.

The vision of the initiative is to provide a space for public elementary school children in Cowley County to enjoy vigorous exercise through organized games and unstructured play before, during and after the school day. This grant is a 1:1 matching opportunity up to $2,000.

One grant will be available to each of the 13 public elementary schools in Cowley County. The purpose is to enhance built environment and/or equipment purchase that provide and promote school children to be more physically active in order to address the rising rate of obesity in our area.

The foundation is committed to creating a stronger future for the area by building endowments, providing informed leadership and connecting donors to the critical needs of the region.  This commitment includes the health of our children.  According to the foundation, Cowley County is currently ranked the 95th healthiest county out of the 105 counties in Kansas.  Additionally, access to exercise in Cowley County is rated 54% versus the state average of 78%.

The grant program was first announced in June 2018. To submit an application, review the document found on the Legacy Foundation website www.legacyregionalfoundation.org for details regarding the application process. Applications will be accepted through March 15.
