A 72-year-old Burden man was killed Friday – and a local woman was injured – in a two-vehicle accident just south of the roundabout in Ark City.

The Kansas Highway Patrol identified the deceased as Maurice Howe. He was transported to the hospital in Ark City following the accident and later died.

Around 10:10 a.m., Howe was southbound in a 2005 Dodge Grand Caravan when he crossed the centerline and struck a Chrysler 200 driven by 24-year-old Darissa A. Topper, of Winfield. Topper had to be freed from her vehicle by emergency crews.

She was then transported to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita with what the KHP report described as “suspected serious injury.” Both drivers had been wearing seatbelts.

The highway patrol report did no indicate why Mr. Howe had crossed the centerline.

An update on Topper’s current condition was not immediately available.
