Sheriff: Teen Who Sustained Self-Inflicted Gunshot Wound At AC Bridge Has Died

Updated from Friday:

A juvenile who was hospitalized Friday afternoon after sustaining a gunshot wound during an incident in the area of the West Chestnut bridge in Ark City has died, according to Cowley County Sheriff David Falletti Monday morning.

The teen was a 17-year-old male and a student at Ark City High School. Falletti declined information regarding the weapon used.

Around 4:50 p.m. Friday, law enforcement officers with the sheriff’s office and the Arkansas City Police Dept. were dispatched to the West Chestnut Bridge for the report of an individual who had reportedly been shooting into the water, from the bridge.

Upon arrival, law enforcement set up a perimeter and measures were being taken to contact the individual.

Before contact could be made, the individual sustained a single self-inflicted gunshot wound. A resident in that area told KSOK-Newscow there was a significant law enforcement presence in the area for some time following the incident.

That person was transported to the hospital in Ark City before being transferred to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.

“We extend our sincerest sympathies to the student’s family and friends,” USD 470 Spokesperson Alisha Call stated to KSOK-Newscow Monday afternoon. “As always, we encourage students to reach out and our counselors are available to meet with students upon request.

“Out of respect for the family and privacy laws, we have no additional information to provide at this time.”
