Past and Present Employees Of William Newton Hospital Play Role In Funding Drive

William Newton Hospital Employees are playing a significant role in raising money for the hospital’s Second Century Campaign. That campaign will help fund new services and expansion of the hospital.

William Newton Hospital’s continued success is very important to the present and past employees and staff that make the hospital run.

Former administrator Dick Vaught says quality people is one of the many things that made his job easier. He retired from the hospital in 2013, after 35 years of service.

“Certainly I would have to mention all the highly skilled employees and physicians we have,” he said. “Winfield has been so blessed to have wonderfully trained staff and wonderful physicians.”

Vaught remains connected to the hospital through the William Newton Healthcare Foundation and is helping the hospital raise money for its Second Century Campaign. Money raised will help fund necessary expansion at the hospital.

He said the hospital is financially healthy for numerous reasons, including:

· Continuity in leadership (3 administrators in 49 years and Board Members serving multiple 5 year terms.)

· Highly skilled employees and medical staff.

· Well-maintained facility with constant improvements and expansion.

· Expanded market base; rural health clinics in Cowley, Elk, and Chautauqua Counties.

· Strong relationships with specialists in Wichita; kidney dialysis, cardiology and cancer treatment to name a few.

· Decision to apply to become a Medicare designated critical access hospital with greatly enhanced reimbursement and no meaningful limitations on scope of services that can be provided.

· Creation of the William Newton Healthcare Foundation

It’s fundraising through the William Newton Healthcare Foundation that will help make providing current, new, and expanded services possible.

Dick Vaught

Vaught had this to say about the Foundation:

“We realized it had become a financial reality that if we were going to continue to maintain and upgrade our facility, philanthropy was going to play a role in helping us do that,” he said. “We’re a not-for-profit hospital, a charitable organization. We provide millions of dollars a year in free and uncompensated services, and philanthropy is now playing a critical role in that.”

Significantly, the hospital family, which includes employees, physicians, hospital and foundation board members and auxiliary members have pledged $1.15 million out of a total $2.66 million total to the campaign thus far. WNH employees have pledged nearly $146,000. The hospital family believes in keeping our system strong.

Diana Duncan, a retired nurse at William Newton Hospital, still returns to the hospital regularly and is active in the Second Century Campaign and the ‘We are William Newton!’ Employee Campaign.

“All my friends are there. I spent so much time there; I really love going back,” she said. “And I care deeply about the hospital. I want it to be successful and to prosper for years to come.”

We are William Newton!

William Newton Hospital was made possible through the generosity of William Newton who, upon his death in 1923, left considerable assets to the city of Winfield for the construction of a hospital. Mr. Newton’s extraordinary gift meant our not-for-profit hospital would be governed by and responsive only to the healthcare needs of the communities served. Since then, local citizens have volunteered and have been appointed to lead the growth and development of WNH. They have been making strategic decisions since, to meet the ever changing needs of approximately 66,000 residents in our service area.

Help us build a legacy of quality healthcare by donating funds to the William Newton Healthcare Foundation in your name, in honor of a loved one, or in cooperation with your organization.
