William Newton Hospital In Winfield Has Been Busy Adding Programs – AD

Phase 1 construction has been underway since fall 2018 at William Newton Hospital.

The Second Century Campaign, initiated in 2017, reflects on 90-plus years of hospital history and prepares for another 100 years of service. The plan supports William Newton Hospital’s long-term plan to expand facilities, meeting demands for access to healthcare in Cowley County and neighboring regions.

The hospital will leverage the philanthropic support generated by the campaign to recruit and retain skilled physicians and add additional types of services necessary to provide modern and preferred quality healthcare.

Becky Long and Dared Price are members of the board of directors for the William Newton Healthcare Foundation. Long is with Albright Realty in Winfield and Price is owner of Graves Drug.
Both are pleased with the many new services William Newton Hospital has added in recent years. Long has firsthand experience with one of the new additions.

“One of my favorite new programs is the wound healing and the hyperbaric center,” she said. “I’ve actually been able to use it myself as have members of my family. It does a great job of helping people getting wounds repaired and healed that are hard to clear up and get healthy again.”

Recent additions at William Newton Hospital in Winfield, include:

3D and digital mammography – New digital mammography equipment was installed in 2017. The state-of-the-art 3-D
mammography component went live in winter 2018 and is proven to improve cancer detection by 29 percent.

Wide-bore MRI – The new magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanner, wide-bore model, is designed for a more comfortable patient experience while producing higher quality images. Installed in the fall of 2017, it replaces the conventional closed-bore MRI in operation at the hospital since 2012.

Wound Healing and Hyperbaric Center – With an expansion to include advanced wound healing and hyperbarics in 2017, the William Newton Hospital Wound Healing & Hyperbaric Center provides the latest innovations including hyperbaric oxygen therapy. Skilled physicians Drs. Morrissey and Elliott work alongside the William Newton Hospital Wound Healing team to help patients heal better and faster. The center is also staffed by Shelly Crader, APRN, new to WNH in 2018.

Hospitalist program – In October 2018, the hospital entered into a partnership with Rural Physicians Group (RPG) to offer 24/7 in-hospital coverage by board-certified internal medicine physicians. WNH hospitalists provide immediate responsiveness to both patients and nursing staff within acute, critical, and swing bed units. Hospitalists, whose focus is caring for patients while they are in the hospital, partner with all members of the patient’s healthcare team including the primary care physician or surgeon. This coordination assures patient care is tailored to meet individual needs.

Heart Cath Lab – Price is excited about this addition, in particular.

“Part of the latest expansion is to put in place a heart cath lab that we hope to have functioning by fall of 2019,” he said. “This is my favorite part of the new additions that William Newton Hospital has done. We have been in great need of this for so long. I’m really excited that it’s coming to Winfield.”

Phase One Expansion:
The 10-year master plan includes six phases. The northeast corner of the hospital is the primary site for the first phase of work. Phase one includes renovation of the surgical department including new surgical suites, pre and post op areas, a catheterization area, also known as a cath lab, which is being supervised by Heartland Cardiology and slated to be available this fall. There will also be a chapel and two waiting rooms. These changes allow for all surgical services to be centralized. The pharmacy has been relocated to second floor and central supply is being relocated as part of this work. Improving the efficiency of the hospital staff, providing greater privacy for patients and enhancing the comfort of visitors and loved ones are some of our goals.
