Cowley College To Offer Intro To Firearms Class Beginning Next Fall

Cowley College is set to offer an Introduction to Firearms course that will begin in the fall 2019 semester.

School officials said that with the safe handling of firearms more important than ever and the growing popularity of shooting sports, adding the new course made sense.

The course will be taught by Robbie Delong, who is currently the interim Chief of Police for the Winfield Police Department. Delong has also instructed firearms qualification for the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center and has years of firearms instructions experience.

He has also served as the team leader of the Southern Kansas SWAT team.

This class is being offered in connection with the Criminal Justice Program. The course is designed to benefit a wide variety of people, from people who have never held a firearm up to the level of someone who has moderate to significant experience with firearms.

It is offered for college credit and is open to anyone that is registered as a student at Cowley.

Introduction to Firearms will cover several topics associated with firearms, including firearms safety, operation and maintenance and will allow students to gain experience with pistols, shotguns and rifles. The course will incorporate the college’s Ti training simulator as well as offer students several range days.

For the fall of 2019 semester the course will be offered as an evening course taking place on Wednesday evenings with some scheduled Saturdays for range days.
