Allen Miller

Allen W. Miller, 66, of Cambridge, Kansas, passed away Monday morning, April 29, 2019 at Harry Hynes Hospice in Wichita.

Born October 30, 1952 in Canton, Ohio, he was the son of Aulden W. and Evelyn (Boltz) Miller. He was raised and received his education in Ohio, Michigan, and Arizona, attending Maryvale High School in Phoenix, Arizona. Allen joined the United States Army in August 1970. During the remainder of Vietnam, Allen was stationed in Germany as a Tank Mechanic. He then went to Fort Monmouth, New Jersey, then Fort Meade, Maryland, home of the National Security Agency. Allen also spent two years in communications, on the Black Sea, south of the USSR (Russia). After three and a half years in the Army Reserve, he joined the United States Navy in February 1980 and served on the USS Oldendorf as Non-Commissioned Officer in charge of number two engine room. He then spent nine and a half years in various commands in the San Diego, California area. Allen served his country a total of 23 years, receiving his final discharge in August of 1993. While serving his country, he received an Associates Degree from the University of New York, and shortly after his discharge, received a bachelor’s degree from National University in San Diego, California.

Allen was united in marriage to Marjorie (Tredway) DeVore on June 10, 1982 in Winfield, Kansas. The couple made their first home in the San Diego area, where Allen owned and operated Miller Construction. In 1992, they moved to Cambridge, Kansas, and he began Allen Fire Equipment.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Douglass, Kansas, the National Rifle Association, and the American Legion Post #4 in Wichita. Allen also served in many volunteer positions, including Cambridge Fire Department, President of Cowley County Fire District #8, Relay for Life, Cowley County Economic Development Council, Cambridge City Council, Water/Waste Water Superintendent of Cambridge, relief rural mail carrier, and reserve officer for the Burden Police Department.

His family includes his wife Marjorie J. Miller of Cambridge; daughter Jennifer M. Cimmiyotti and husband, Robert of Ellis; son John M. Miller and wife, Jamie of Haysville; grandchildren, Thomas L. Shepard, Adelita R. Shepard, Josie A. Shepard, Quinton I. Shepard; mother Evelyn R. Bloomhall of Winfield; sisters, Ruth E. Tredway and husband, Walter of Bolivar, MO; Carol A. Woods and husband, Kenneth of Bolivar, MO; Phyllis L. Rhyons and husband, Greg of Avondale, AZ; Melissa R. Cigelske of Phoenix, AZ; and several nephews and nieces.

Allen was preceded in death by his father, Aulden W. Miller, infant granddaughter, Hannah Leah Shepard, and son-in-law, Lance Shepard.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Saturday, May 4, 2019 at the First Baptist Church in Douglass. Interment with Military Committal Honors will follow at the Cambridge Cemetery. A visitation is scheduled at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield on Friday from 4 to 8 P.M. The family will greet visitors during this time.

In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established in Allen’s name for Relay for Life of Winfield. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
