Straight-line winds pushed over seven sitting train cars Tuesday evening south of Rock in Cowley County.

The derailment happened west of U.S. 77 near 42nd Road.

Cowley County Sheriff Dave Falletti told KSOK-NewsCow from the scene that some of the cars contained hazardous materials, but not a significant amount to cause alarm.

“There’s such small quantities and we don’t feel there’s enough damage to cause any leaks,” Falletti said. “We’re not going to do any kind of evacuation or anything. It’s a rural enough area we don’t need to.”

Falletti said BNSF is sending a hazmat team out of Great Bend to the derailment as a precautionary measure.

“It’s kind of in an area very difficult to get to,” Falletti said. “There’s no danger to the public as far as we know at this time.”

Falletti said some deputies were already in the area in the 13000 block tending to a minor injury accident that was weather-related due to heavy rain.
