Thomas Hazzard, Jr.

Thomas L. Hazzard, Jr., 70, of Winfield, Kansas, passed away Saturday morning, May 11, 2019 at his home.

Born June 26, 1948 in Wichita, Kansas, he was the son of Thomas L. and Elizabeth M. (Wilson) Hazzard. While still an infant he was placed in the Wichita Children’s home prior to moving to the Winfield State Hospital and Training Center in February of 1949. In December of 1961 he moved to Topeka, Kansas and lived at Kansas Neurological Institute until returning to Winfield in 1974. He remained at the Winfield State Hospital and Training Center until 1997 when he became a resident of Capper Foundation. Tommie enjoyed eating ice cream, talking to his sister Cheryl on the phone, and listening to old country music and hymns.

His family includes his sister Cheryl Austin of Phoenix, AZ; his guardian Stephanie Bortz and husband, Gary of Winfield; his roommates, Richard Tarrant, Ronald Hanshaw, and Timothy Welch; and a host of friends and caregivers at Capper Foundation.

Memorial services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Friday, May 17, 2019 at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield. A private family inurnment will take place, next to his mother in Arizona, at a later date.

A memorial has been established in Tommie’s name for Capper Foundation. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
