ACFD: Man Missing, Three Safe, After Late Night Swim In Arkansas River

Updated: Friday, 11:35 a.m.

A man is missing after he and three others were swimming in the Arkansas River late Thursday night.

A family member contacted KSOK-NewsCow Friday morning and identified the missing man as Gary Reece.

According to the Ark City Fire Department Friday morning, a 57-year-old man is still missing after a call was made to the ACFD around 11:30 p.m. Fire Chief Bobby Wolfe told KSOK-NewsCow the three rescued, who were described as younger adults, were treated for exhaustion after they swam to safety. The incident happened in rural Cowley County near the state line.

Emergency crews brought a boat to the scene and searched the river until 4:30 a.m. They returned to the river at daylight and could not find the missing man.

Rivers in the region were at historical highs and flooding was widespread last week.

ACFD said the search is now under the jurisdiction of Oklahoma Highway Patrol.
