More Than Half A Foot Of Rain Recorded Monday, Rivers Again Expected To Flood

Flood warnings continue in the region Tuesday as heavy rains drenched the area all day and all night Monday.

According to Ark City Emergency Management Coordinator Bob Frazee Tuesday morning, the Walnut River at Winfield was at 27.8 feet as of 9 a.m. Flood stage is 18 feet and a crest of 35.1 feet is expected by Wednesday afternoon.

Just two weeks ago, rains flooded the Winfield Fairgrounds and the Walnut River crested at 36.84 feet in Winfield — the 8th highest in recorded Winfield history.

 

 

Frazee said 24-hour rain totals Monday saw 6 inches-plus throughout the region.

The Walnut River at Ark City was 20.5 feet and rising as of 9 a.m. Tuesday morning and a crest of 22.5 feet is expected by Thursday afternoon.

City crews have closed storm water gates on the Walnut River overnight. and storm water gates at the Arkansas River levee were closed Monday evening.

Frazee said the Arkansas River at Ark City is 17 feet and rising as of 9 a.m.  Flood stage for the Arkansas River at Ark City is 11 feet and a crest of 20 feet is expected by Wednesday morning.
