Winfield voters have overwhelmingly approved a 1-cent sales tax to fund the construction of a public safety facility and ongoing street and maintenance repair projects.

Of the 2,184 ballots returned to the Cowley County Clerk’s office, 1,892 voted in favor of the measure, while 292 voted against.

Voter turnout was 38 percent.

Cowley County Clerk Karen Madison told KSOK-NewsCow in May 5,820 ballots were mailed.

City officials held town halls leading up to the release of the ballots to discuss the question with voters. Sales tax in Winfield will increase from 7.9 percent to 8.5 percent beginning Oct. 1.

The new facilities will be at the location of the former Winfield Middle School building. The City of Winfield purchased the then-vacant building and demolished the structure and associated facilities in April 2018.
