Arson Suspected Following Investigation Of Winfield Car Fire

Police and fire investigators are working to determine who set a fire early Sunday morning that destroyed a vehicle parked at a local residence.

“We believe someone set this fire,” Greg Venable, of the Winfield Police Dept. said. “All the information we have, so far, indicates it’s a set fire. That someone did this intentionally.”

It’s the fifth arson investigation in the Winfield area in a span of a few weeks. Venable said he hopes information from this incident could lead to breaks in some of the other cases, which all involved structures.

Testing has been done to determine if an accelerant was present at the scene of the fire in the 800 block of E. 11th. Winfield Fire officials are assisting in the investigation.

Police were called to the residence around 1 a.m. and the small four-door SUV is considered a total loss, Venable said. No one was injured.

However, he said, people were in the residence and the vehicle was not far from the home.

“Obviously this situation could have ended with someone getting badly injured,” Venable said. “So we’d like to figure out who did this as quickly as we can.”
