Every patient will be asked two questions upon registration: “Are you a veteran?” and “Would you like to be recognized?” William Newton Hospital encourages veterans to self-identify.

If the patient agrees to be recognized, an American flag wristband will be placed on their wrist. If the patient is admitted to a unit in the hospital, an American flag magnet will be placed on the door frame outside of their room.

A flag sticker will also be placed on the spine of their medical chart.

According to Chief Nursing Officer Laura Frazier, the modest, yet visible flags will assist staff and volunteers in the quick recognition of veterans.

Fraizer said the news release that “It is our goal to always treat veterans with courtesy and respect and create an environment of peace and quiet.”

Staff and volunteers are encouraged to thank veterans for their service during their hospital stay.
