UPDATE: Victim In Southwestern Shooting Has Died; Police Investigating As Homicide

UPDATED: Monday, 1:44 p.m.

Authorities have identified the man shot early Wednesday morning at an apartment on the campus of Southwestern College in Winfield, according to a news release from the Winfield Police Department Monday afternoon.

The victim, who has since died due to his injuries, has been identified as 32-year-old Gabriel Luna.

Luna died from his injuries Friday evening while being treated at a Wichita hospital.  This incident is now being investigated as a homicide. 

It is believed that this is an isolated incident and there is no immediate threat to the public, the news release stated.

The WPD is asking for anyone who has knowledge about the shooting or who may have witnessed the shooting to contact the Winfield Police Department at (620)221-5555or Cowley County Crime Stoppers at either 221-7777 or through their website which may be accessed through the Cowley County website. 

Police said this is an active criminal investigation and no additional information will be released at this time.

A person was shot on the campus of Southwestern College in Winfield early Wednesday morning.

Winfield Police Chief Robbie DeLong told KSOK-NewsCow the individual was transported to a Wichita-area hospital for treatment. Their condition is unknown at this time.

According to a press release from the WPD later Wednesday morning, it is believed this is an isolated incident and that there is no threat to the public.

DeLong said authorities were called to Honors Apartments in the 1700 block of Fowler on the campus of Southwestern at 1:08 a.m. for a report of a gunshot victim.

The victim was transported to the emergency room at William Newton Memorial Hospital in Winfield and was then transported by air ambulance to a Wichita-area hospital.

Housing at the college closed Friday for the holidays and few students are allowed to stay throughout the winter break.

Residents living near the area told KSOK-NewsCow they were awakened by the sound of a gunshot.
