Cowley County Attorney Reviewing Case In Shooting Death Of Jake Nettrouer

Cowley County Attorney Larry Schwartz is in the process of determining whether formal criminal charges will be filed in the February shooting death of 38-year-old Jake Nettrouer.

Schwartz told KSOK-NewsCow Thursday afternoon that he’d received the necessary information on the case from the Cowley County Sheriff’s Dept., which conducted the investigation. He said he would need some time to fully review the materials.

The review is expected to require research into state law as it pertains to bail bondsmen. A bondsman was at Nettrouer’s home late on Feb. 23 when Nettrouer was fatally wounded by a single gunshot.

A sheriff’s deputy was outside the residence at 17698 271st Rd., near Cambridge, on civil standby for the bondsman. The shooting occurred inside the home.

The sheriff’s dept. said the bondsman was attempting to take Nettrouer into custody on a bond revocation.

Those that knew Nettrouer told KSOK-NewsCow he was in compliance with conditions of his bond and had a scheduled meeting with the bondsman for the day after he was shot and killed. Nettrouer was arrested on theft and drug charges in November when his home was searched by the Cowley County Sheriff’s Dept.

Wichita-based Fast Eddy’s Bail Bonds was handling Nettrouer’s Bond in the case. The business is operated by Ed Runyon.

KSOK-NewsCow contacted the business through its Facebook page seeking comment. A person, who identified themselves as Mr. Runyon, declined opportunities to speak with a reporter by phone or to make a comment.

“I’m not at liberty to talk about it,” he said.

No arrests have been made in connection with the shooting.
