Heritage Society Key To William Newton Hospital Fundraising; Open House Is Sunday

WINFIELD – At William Newton Hospital there is a heritage of giving that began many, many years ago with the hospital’s namesake, William Newton.

“He made the initial gift of the land the hospital is on, in fact he left his entire estate to the city of Winfield for the explicit purpose of building a hospital,” Hospital Trustee Ste

Steve McSpadden is chair of the Heritage Society which is raising money for expansion of William Newton Hospital.

ve McSpadden said. “So right there, is where the basis of our Heritage Society started was with William Newton, and that heritage continues.”

McSpadden is a co-chair of the hospital’s Second Century Campaign, which is assisting in raising money for upgrades to hospital facilities and expansion of services. MSpadden also chairs the Heritage Society, which works specifically with those interested in making a donation to the hospital’s fundraising campaign, through their will or estate, once they no lconger need those assets.

The Heritage Society committee has been meeting since the middle of 2018 and is focused on stewarding those donors who have already made a commitment to include WNH, and also think of ways to encourage others to make the same beautiful decision.

All heritage donors follow in the footsteps of William Newton.

Recently, the hospital received an anonymous $1 million heritage challenge gift and have nearly reached that fundraising goal. The gesture by this anonymous donor underscores the importance of heritage giving, and proves that WNH is an institution worthy of such a gift, not because of need, but because it is a beacon of excellence and pride in our community.

The hospital will be turning 100 in 2027; with the forward thinking of this campaign, and what it will do to help the hospital move into the next century, as well as the importance of having this hospital here for the next century of community members, is the reason why the campaign is named The Second Century Campaign.

The goal is to have 100 Heritage Society members by 2027. That number is near 25 at the moment.

McSpadden points out that the hospital is not subsidized by taxpayers and, thus, charitable giving is a vital source of funding. As a second century draws nearer, the hospital continues to do well financially and strives to improve and expand services.

Annika Morris, director of the William Newton Healthcare Foundation, explained the hospital fundraising goals:

“The Second Century Campaign is a ten-year, master-facility plan fundraising effort with a $25 million cost,” she said. “Ten million of that will be philanthropic dollars.”

Heritage Committee members include: David Andreas, Cheryl Brock, Mary Jarvis, Joe Langley Becky Long, Steve McSpadden, Patty Neises, Paula Radcliff, and Beth Wilke. They have made decisions for the future of the Heritage Society including, but not limited to: policy updates, enlisting new heritage society committee members and/or donors, and spreading the news to local CPAs, attorneys, etc. about the opportunity to give a deferred gift to the hospital.
