Public Pools in Winfield and Ark City To Open Next Week; Dexter BBQ Canceled

Public swimming pools in Winfield and Ark City will open soon, after delays due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Ark City plans to open the Paris Park Pool on Monday for a shortened season. The pool is operated by the Ark City Rec Center.

Winfield’s city pool will open June 12, city manager Taggart Wall said. Additional precautions are being taken to increase public safety.

These are the additional precautions in Winfield, Wall said:

  • No patron or employee exhibiting illness should enter the facility.
  • Hand Sanitizer for patrons and staff upon entry and at concession areas
  • Encouraging the use of a mask, but not in the water (per CDC guidelines)
  • Increased cleaning regimen with a bleach/water disinfectant
  • Since pool furniture cannot be reliably disinfected between users, patrons will need to bring their own chairs.  Exception: The tables in the concession area may be utilized and will be sanitized every 20 minutes
  • Social distancing announcements will be made on the loudspeakers every 20 minutes
  • All standing lines will be marked for 6 ft. distancing
  • Public lockers and drinking fountains will not be in use
  • Pool party reservations can be made by calling the aquatic center at 221-5639.

THE DEXTER BBQ CANCELED

Officials with the Dexter Civic Club have announced there will be no Dexter BBQ this summer, due to COVID-19 concerns.

Organizers of the long-time annual event said rising beef prices and the logistics behind providing a safe and sanitized environment led to the decision.

The event plans to return in the summer of 2021.

49th WALNUT VALLEY FESTIVAL

Officials with the Walnut Valley Festival, an acoustic music festival that happens each year at the Winfield Fairgrounds, are monitoring the coronavirus situation.

As of now, the organization is proceeding as if the festival will go on. No official decision, however, has been made.
