Chip Sealing Set For August In Ark City On C Street From Kansas To Radio Lane

The City of Arkansas City will continue its annual chip-sealing program this summer, with work scheduled on C Street starting in August, according to a news release from the city Wednesday.

Public Services Department crews plan to perform chip sealing on North C Street from East Kansas Avenue to East Radio Lane. Preparation work on the street will begin this week.

Work also will begin soon to repair the sidewalks and decking on the bridge over the C Street Canal.

This $19,070 construction project is being performed by Waller Construction, of Ponca City, Oklahoma. The project is expected to be completed by the end of this month.

“We are asking that area residents consider finding alternative routes while this work is ongoing,” said Public Services Superintendent Tony Tapia. “Thank you for your patience and cooperation.”

Chip sealing is a street maintenance process using a pavement surface treatment that combines one or more layer(s) of asphalt with one or more layer(s) of fine aggregate.

It is used on lower traffic roadways to extend road lifespan and save on the cost of a more expensive mill-and-overlay project.

Chip seals are constructed by evenly distributing a thin base of hot tar, bitumen or asphalt onto an existing pavement and then embedding finely graded aggregate into it. The aggregate is distributed over the hot seal spray, then rolled into the bitumen using heavy rubber-tired rollers, creating a paved surface.
