Winfield City Commission Will Take Up Mask Issue When They Meet Monday

City commissioners in Winfield Monday will discuss Kansas Governor Laura Kelly’s order calling for residents to wear face masks in public because of the Covid-19 Pandemic. The three-member commission could then decide whether or not to back the governor’s order.

On Friday, Cowley County commissioners voted unanimously to opt out of the order and not require masks to be worn in the county. City commissioners, though, have authority to decide if the order would be followed within the city limits of Winfield.

The topic has been added to the agenda for the commission’s regular meeting at 5:30 p.m. Monday. That meeting is scheduled to be held online, however, there is a possibility it could be moved to an outdoor location for a live meeting, in order to offer the best opportunity for public comment.

A decision on a live meeting will be announced Monday morning.

Commissioners and city officials have received numerous comments, from those on both sides of the issue, since the county voted Friday.

When contacted by KSOK-NewsCow Sunday, City Manager Taggart Wall said the commission will take public comment and then likely decide how to move forward. One option, he said, is to enforce, locally, the framework of the governor’s order.
