City Of Ark City Says There May Be Excessive Burn Pit Smoke In Coming Weeks

Following a significant ice storm Tuesday, the City of Arkansas City continues the long process of digging out and cleaning up fallen tree limbs and branches, according to a press release Friday.

The Public Services Department on Thursday finished making sure major arterial and collector roadways were passable for through traffic. Once the main roadways were cleared, the department’s focus began to shift to smaller residential side streets. Alleyways will remain the lowest priority.

Residents who are able to do so are reminded to collect fallen limbs and branches by the side of their curbs this weekend for pickup next week. If unable to do so, please call (620) 441-4460 during business hours. To report a large tree limb blocking a roadway at any time, you may call (620) 441-3766.

Public Services Department crews eventually will shift toward collecting curbside tree debris, but this effort may not commence until next week. Curbside pickup is expected to continue for about two weeks.

In the meantime, residents who have the ability to haul tree debris to the F Street Limb and Compost Site are urged to do so in order to reduce the City’s workload. The F Street location will be opened temporarily for extended hours. Those hours will be from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays.

“There is a lot of green, wet wood that will need to be burned at the F Street burn pit over the course of the next few weeks,” said City Manager Randy Frazer. “We will monitor burn conditions, but this still will undoubtedly be an annoyance to parts of the community over the next several days. We apologize for any inconvenience and urge residents with health conditions to monitor smoke levels accordingly.”

For questions about tree debris pickup procedure or to request specialized assistance, please call (620) 441-4460 during normal business hours.
