Adams Elementary will also be closed for two weeks and students will remote learn due to COVID-19, according to the USD 470 Sunday.

Saturday, the district announced Arkansas City Middle School will be closed for two weeks and those students will revert to remote learning during that time, according to USD 470 Saturday night.

Individuals at Ark City Middle School have tested positive for COVID-19 and a result of these cases and the number of close contacts that need to isolate, ACMS will transition to a remote learning model for two weeks.

Students will resume in-person learning on Nov. 23.

“We know this poses an inconvenience to many families but we want to act with an abundance of caution when it comes to the safety of our school families,” USD 470 Superintendent Dr. Ron Ballard said.

Frances Willard Elementary and Adams Elementary also have individuals with COVID-19 but the situation at those sites is such that regular in-person learning can continue at this time.

As the number of COVID-19 cases increases within the district and community, the district reminds everyone to be mindful of their own health and the health of others.

“We encourage you to avoid large gatherings and to safely interact within the community by wearing masks and maintaining safe social distances. It will take all of us working together to keep our schools open and activities underway,” Ballard said.

USD 470 continues to monitor these situations and remains flexible. Any changes to operations will be communicated with families via various communication channels.

Cases have jumped significantly since Monday.

Total cases now number 711, according to Friday’s report from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment — and increase of 103 since Monday’s KDHE report of 608.

Active cases are not known, since that data has been removed from the City-Cowley County Health Department’s website. Instead, a link to KDHE’s coronavirus map is provided.
