ACPD Arrests Suspect For Murder After Local Man Is Shot Late Friday

One man is dead and another is custody following a shooting late Friday in Arkansas City, police said Saturday morning.

38-year-old Samuel Hutton was taken to South Central Kansas Medical Center after police responded, around 9:33 p.m., to the intersection of U.S. 77 bypass and Madison for the report of a shooting. He later died of his injuries.

Local police worked with the Cowley County Sheriff’s Dept. to locate a suspect, who was identified as 40-year-old James Lyle Clark. He was taken into custody just before 6 a.m. Saturday east of Ark City.

He is facing a charge of second-degree murder and has been booked into the Cowley County Jail in Winfield. No bond has been set.

When officers responded to the initial shooting report, they found a vehicle with a passenger in it who had been shot.

During subsequent investigation, police identified Clark as a suspect in the shooting, which they determined had occurred at his residence at 1325 South A St. in southeast Arkansas City.
Officers applied for and executed a search warrant overnight at Clark’s residence.

They worked through the night to attempt to locate Clark and, with the assistance of the Cowley County Sheriff’s Office, he was located and arrested without incident at 5:35 a.m. east of Arkansas City.
