SKOL Railroad Has Minor Derailment Wednesday In Northwest Winfield

A minor train derailment in the northwest portion of Winfield Wednesday led to a minimal amount of diesel and oil leaking from the train’s engine.

That leakage was contained within the railbed, no hazardous materials were involved and there was no hazard to the community, Winfield Fire Marshal Chad Mayberry said in a written statement to the media. Crews with Southern Kansas & Oklahoma Railroad, with assistance from Burlington Northern Santa Fe crews, were on scene Wednesday evening.

Around 5:25 p.m., Winfield Fire/EMS, Winfield Police, Cowley County Sheriff’s Office, and Cowley County Emergency Management were dispatched to the report of a train derailment with fuel leaking north of the intersection of Phillips Sheppard Road and W. Ninth Ave.

Upon arrival, these agencies were met by representatives of SKOL Railroad. The train crew advised that they were headed eastbound transitioning from Burlington Northern Santa Fe track onto SKOL rail line when they experienced a partial derailment.

The derailment involved four empty tank cars, an empty open top hopper car, and 1 engine.

No injuries were reported.

All of the train cars remained upright and connected together. SKOL crews were en route for cleanup. As of 7 p.m., all emergency response crews had cleared the scene, Mayberry said.
