Two Winfield residents were killed in an accident Thursday afternoon in Sumner County on U.S. 160 between Wellington and Oxford.

The Sumner County Sheriff’s Office identified the victims as Sherry Bodkins and Donald O’Neil. A service dog was also killed in the accident.

Sumner County Sheriff Deputies were dispatched at 3:25 p.m. Thursday to investigate an accident at the intersection of U.S. 160 Highway and Oliver Road.

Upon arrival, deputies observed a maroon Chevy Tahoe resting in the east ditch near the southeast corner of the intersection.

Resting in the field approximately 30 yards southeast of the intersection was a silver Jeep Renegade.

The preliminary investigation revealed the Tahoe, operated by Markus Washington, of Fort Worth, Texas, was traveling southbound on Oliver Road approaching U.S. 160 Highway. Washington reported having mechanical problems and could not stop at the stop sign.

His vehicle struck the Jeep Renegade traveling eastbound operated by Bodkins.

Bodkins and her passenger, O’Neil, along with a service dog, died at the scene from their injuries.

Both vehicle were a total loss.

An investigation is ongoing.
