WPD: Man Found In River Near Tunnel Mill Damn Transported To Wichita Hospital

A man was transported to a Wichita hospital Thursday following a fall into the Walnut River at the Tunnel Mill Dam area in Winfield.

According to a news release from the Winfield Police Department Friday, members of the Winfield Police Department and Winfield Fire and EMS were dispatched to the Tunnel Mill Dam area in Winfield at 10:22 a.m. Thursday for a report of a subject who had fallen into the water.

The initial reporting party told emergency communication officials that the male had fallen into the river and had not resurfaced.

Upon arrival, officers from the WPD and deputies from the Cowley County Sheriff’s Office were directed to an area in the Walnut River, while conducting search operations the male victim was found in the river nonresponsive.

Immediate life saving measures were deployed, and members of Winfield Fire and EMS transported the individual in critical condition to William Newton Hospital. The male victim was later transported to a Wichita area hospital for further treatment.

During the investigation, officers were told the victim was seen standing on top of the dam moments before falling into the water and was swept underwater into the river.

Winfield police and Winfield Fire and EMS were assisted in this incident by members of the Cowley County Sheriff’s Office.

The name of the victim has not been released.
