Firefighters were called late Thursday morning to a residence in the 1100 block of East 6th Avenue in Winfield.

The Winfield Fire Department told KSOK-NewsCow later in the day Thursday that the house was occupied but those inside had escaped the home by the time first responders arrived.

No injuries were reported.

According to WFD Chief Vince Warren, firefighters were called to the scene at 10:30 a.m. and were initially told a person was trapped inside, but arrived to find everyone out of the home and accounted for.

“They were pretty lucky,” Warren told KSOK-NewsCow. “The house is a total loss.”

Warren said the home was fully engulfed when firefighters arrived and that five people who where in the home had escaped the blaze, including a dog and a cat.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

WFD was assisted by Ark City Fire Department, Burden Fire and Udall Fire.
