The City of Arkansas City will resume its annual chip-sealing program this summer, with work scheduled on First through Fifth streets starting next week, according to a news release from the City Friday.

Weather permitting, Public Services Department crews plan to begin chip sealing Tuesday morning on North First and North Second streets, from West Kansas Avenue north to the C Street Canal, followed by North Third through North Fifth streets, from West Kansas Avenue north to Oak Avenue.

The Street and Stormwater Division also plans to begin chip sealing during the same time frame on West Palmetto Avenue, from Summit Street west to North Fifth Street.

“We are asking that area residents consider finding alternative routes while this work is ongoing,” said Public Services Superintendent Tony Tapia. “Please do not park vehicles on these streets during the times designated on the door hangers we will put up. Thank you for your patience and cooperation.”

Chip sealing is a street maintenance process using a pavement surface treatment that combines one or more layer(s) of asphalt with one or more layer(s) of fine aggregate. It is used on lower traffic roadways to extend road lifespan and save on the cost of a more expensive mill-and-overlay project.

Chip seals are constructed by evenly distributing a thin base of hot tar, bitumen or asphalt onto an existing pavement and then embedding finely graded aggregate into it. The aggregate is distributed over the hot seal spray, then rolled into the bitumen using heavy rubber-tired rollers, creating a paved surface.

Future street sections the Public Services Department hopes to chip seal later this summer include:

• North A and North B streets (1400 blocks north to the C Street Canal)
• North A, North B and North D streets (from East Kansas Avenue south to Poplar Avenue)
• North C Street (from East Kansas Avenue south to East Linden Avenue)
• West Lincoln Avenue (from South Fourth Street east to South Summit Street/U.S. 77)
