Trimmer Presented KSHSAA Governor’s Award

Former Winfield educator and state legislator Ed Trimmer was officially recognized by the Kansas State High School Activities Association last week, according to a Facebook post from USD 465 over the weekend.

In April, Trimmer was awarded the 2020 KSHSAA Governor’s Award for outstanding contributions in the field of secondary education in Kansas.

The presentation was delayed to last week due to the pandemic.

Trimmer served in the Kansas House of Representative from 2006-2018, where he was the Minority Whip from 2015 until the end of his tenure, as well as
the ranking minority member for several committees, according to KSHSAA.

His assignments included Education, Education Budget Committee, education interim committees and KPERS interim study commissions among many other committees.

Prior to serving in the legislature, Trimmer served 32 years as an award winning teacher and coach at Winfield High School. His main subject material involved debate/speech and other English/ Language Arts courses.

He was inducted into the both the Kansas Debate Coaches Hall of Fame and the Kansas Teachers’ Hall of Fame after his retirement.

Trimmer is currently serving on the Winfield Board of Education and teaches English at Burden-Central High School.

The KSHSAA Governor’s Award Selection Committee is comprised of the presidents of the Kansas National Education Association, Kansas Association of School Boards, United School Administrators, Kansas Association of Secondary School Principals and the Kansas School Superintendents’ Association.

“I am honored to be included in the list of such dedicated people who have received this award,” Trimmer told KSHAA for its April 2020 newsletter. ” I have dedicated my life to public education because I believe it is the great equalizer.

“Any motivated student or athlete, who has the desire and work ethic, can achieve great things no matter what their background or economic status.”
