No More Sightings Of Bear That Could Instead Be A Raccoon

It’s been a week since a video of what looked like a bear in Winfield hit the news and since then? Well, there have been no more sightings and now it’s not clear if the creature was actually a bear at all.

“I have spent more time looking at this, and I feel confident it is a raccoon based on a couple different features,” Matt Peek, wildlife research biologist with the Kansas Dept. of Wildlife and Parks, said this morning. “Others still look at it and feel with confidence it is a bear. So, I guess our conclusion is still uncertain.”

Regardless of make and model, there have been no more reports of a bear or anything else it could have been.

On Jan. 8, doorbell cam footage captured a creature on the porch of a home in Winfield. Video was later released encouraging locals to be on the lookout and watch for their pets’ safety. If you do see the bear, raccoon, wombat or whatever it is, call Peek at (620) 342-0658.
