Police: Winfield Resident Fends Off Armed Intruder Thursday Night

An armed intruder was confronted and injured by a resident in Winfield Thursday, local police said this morning.

Around 8:40 p.m., an individual reported the intruder had entered his home, in the 200 block of W. 14th, with a firearm. A struggle ensued and the alleged assailant was stabbed with an edged weapon, like a large knife, or sword.

The intruder fled the scene and was later located at William Newton Hospital in Winfield. That’s where police made contact with that person.

Cody M. Smith, 35, Wichita, was arrested and booked on charges of aggravated assault and aggravated burglary. He remained in the Cowley County Jail Friday.

An investigation is ongoing and police believe this to be an isolated incident. More details are expected to be released soon, Police Chief Robbie DeLong told NewsCow.
