No Open Burning Allowed Within Winfield Fire District Until Further Notice

Winfield Fire Marshal Chad Mayberry said Friday that no open burning will be allowed in the Winfield Fire District until further notice, due to a declaration from Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly.

Kelly has issued a disaster declaration for the entire state for the period of March 3 to March 18.

A combination of dry grassland, low relative humidity, unseasonably warm temperatures, gusty winds and an abundance of dry grass and other flammable vegetation will increase the risk of wildland fire spread.

Already there have been multiple reports of grass fires in South Central Kansas.

“The Winfield Fire District has been placed at Status 3 indefinitely,” Mayberry said in an email. “What this means is that no open burning will be allowed within the Winfield Fire District until notified otherwise.”
