Winfield Woman Arrested Sunday After Incident Said To Involve A Knife

A 42-year-old Winfield woman was arrested Sunday morning following an incident, said to involve a knife, that occurred during a disagreement over money.

Megan Wheeler was booked into the Cowley County Jail on charges of aggravated assault, domestic battery, battery of a law enforcement officer, and interfering with law enforcement. She has since posted bond and been released.

The county attorney’s office will determine what formal charges are brought against Wheeler.

Around 10 a.m, Winfield Police responded to a report of a disturbance inside a residence in the 600 block of College.

Investigators determined the incident began as an argument over money owed from one individual to another. That disagreement escalated and a woman, later identified as Wheeler, retrieved a knife, according to information provided by Police Chief Robbie DeLong.

The knife was taken from Wheeler by another individual inside the residence. Witnesses said Wheeler then picked up a snake hook and brandished it toward another person. At that point someone used pepper spray in an attempt to subdue Wheeler.

As police attempted to arrest Wheeler, she became combative but was eventually taken into custody, DeLong said. No significant injuries were reported.

The Cowley County Sheriff’s Dept. provided assistance.
