Manslaughter Case: Preliminary Hearing For AC’s Walker Moulton Set For Summer

A preliminary hearing is set for this summer for Walker Moulton, the Ark City man charged with manslaughter for the death last fall of high school senior Rhett Lathers.

The hearing is scheduled for 9 a.m. July 12 in Kay County Dist. Court in Newkirk. The date for the proceeding was set this week.

At a preliminary hearing a defendant and his counsel listen as the state presents testimony in the case against the defendant.

A judge then determines if evidence is sufficient to proceed to a jury trial.

Moulton, 19, was booked into the Kay County Jail the night of the accident on charges of DUI and first-degree manslaughter. He posted a $100,000 bond and was released.

Late on Oct. 26, Moulton was the driver of a 2000 Jeep Wrangler that rolled and ejected two passengers in rural Kay County. The accident happened on a two-lane gravel road at East Judo Road and North Enterprize Road, six miles north and four-and-a-half miles east of Newkirk.

Lathers, a member of the football team, was killed. Two others were injured.
