Winfield Man Suffers Serious Injuries In An Accident On U.S. 77 Friday

A Winfield man was seriously injured Friday afternoon in a two vehicle accident south of Winfield on U.S. 77 Highway, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol.

55-year-old Joe Schafman was transported to William Newton Hospital for treatment and was eventually transferred to Wesley Medical Center. An update on his condition was not immediately available Saturday. Schafman was wearing a seatbelt.

He was the driver of a 2007 Ford SUV and was attempting to turn off 77 highway onto 81st Rd. Schafman, according to the highway patrol report, failed to yield to northbound traffic.

The vehicle collided with a 2017 Jeep SUV driven by 40-year-old Jeremy Alan Kirk, of Ark City. Kirk was wearing a seat belt. He was hospitalized for treatment of minor injuries. Schafman’s vehicle rolled over.

The accident happened around 12:40 p.m. as an investigation was underway into an unrelated officer-involved shooting north of Winfield.
