Winfield Police End High Speed Chase Thursday For Safety Reasons

Winfield Police were led on a high-speed pursuit Thursday evening and eventually discontinued their efforts in Ark City due to safety concerns.

Around 7:30 p.m., officers were following up on a tip that an individual who was a person of interest in an Ark City case, was at a Winfield hotel, according to Police Chief Robbie DeLong. Police then observed that person leaving the area of 1800 Main at a high rate of speed.

The car, which was described in radio traffic as a light in color Ford Mustang, ran a stop light at 19th and Main. Winfield Police and Cowley County Sheriff deputies pursued the vehicle as it left the Winfield city limits.

Radio traffic indicated speeds during the pursuit were as high as 106 miles per hour.

“The Pursuit continued to the north end of Arkansas City and our agency discontinued our participation in the pursuit due to losing sight of the vehicle and for safety concerns,” DeLong said. “I was notified that the vehicle nor the driver was located that night.”

The investigation remains active, thus police are not releasing additional information about the person or case.
